# running / London Marathon 2025: Training Begins
5th Jan 2025
Race review here & Training retrospective here
Running the London marathon is my longest-held dream. More than 20 years old. The desire to run through the streets of the greatest city has lived inside me ever since I first watched the Flora London Marathon on the BBC all that time ago.
It means a lot to me to get this chance to run.
A brief running history
I’ve run one marathon, 3 years ago, which I trained pretty well for. I ran 2:49.
Goals for the race
In descending order of importance i.e. most important first:
- a) Run the race & have a great time
- b) Run sub-3-hrs
- c) Run a PB (if training goes very well)
Plan
At time of writing, I have exactly 16 weeks til race day.
Over the past 3 months my training has been up and down, routines disrupted by Christmas & holidays. This leaves with almost no base and no long runs under me.
Not a great start but I’ll do what I can.
The basic principles of my training are:
- Prioritise mileage first, and above all else.
- The long run is everything.
- Workouts, when they come, should be extremely specific.
Goals for this week
This week I want to:
- Run 35 miles, including
- A 12 mile long run, plus
- 1 gym session, all legs
Wish me luck.
